Telluride Regional Airport Re-Opens

The Telluride Airport  has re-opened  following the completion of the second portion of a  four-phase project that will eventually increase the airport’s safety rating and enable it to accommodate the 66-to 78-seat Q400 turboprop aircraft, the project lowered the runway by 30 feet at its west end and by 14 feet at its east end. Direct flights from Denver and Phoenix will be provided through Great Lakes and American Airlines.

New Terrain To Open This Ski Season

After nearly five years of research, planning and discussion the decision to open three more access points in to the world renowned Bear Creek backcountry was announced by the Forest Service’s Norwood District Ranger office. These three new access points (fondly referred to as gates by Telluride skiers) will be added to the Telluride ski area for the 2009/2010 winter ski season. One access point will be located at the top of Palmyra Peak, for entrance to Lena Basin and Alta Lakes Basin; the other two locations will provide access into Lower Bear Creek. These access points will join two already existing gates; one near the top of Lift 15 and the other at the bottom of Bald Mountain.

Three Newcomers Take Council Seats

Telluride has elected three brand new faces to its seven-member town council this week and roundly crushed a pair of tax measures put on the ballot by the town. The race for town council saw the biggest pool of candidates in recent memory with nine vying for four seats. Only one incumbent held on to his seat and also received the highest number of votes at 487 or nearly 15% of the total number of votes received. Also elected was Chris Myers, a local lighting consultant with 473 votes; IT consultant and HARC member Brian Werner, with 431 votes and retired school superintendant Ann Brady; with 415 votes.
